Bristol: Institute of Physics Publishing. – 1995. – 267 p. (Series in Astronomy and Astrophysics) is book will go some way towards setting that record straight. The book is intended to provide a grounding in all aspects of the theory and practice of modern astronomical spectroscopy over the optical part of the spectrum. Additionally, reference is made to aspects of spectroscopy outside this range at times for completeness (e.g. molecular spectra) or because of importance (e.g. the hydrogen 21 cm line). It is anticipated that the book will be useful to those already engaged in astronomical spectroscopy as a reference work, to intending professional astronomers as a textbook to introduce them to the subject, and to amateur astronomers as a challenge to extend their work out of the usual direct observations. Sufficient physical background is included throughout to enable the astronomical aspects of the topic to be understood, but it is not intended to give a thorough coverage of the physical and chemical aspects of spectroscopy. The book is not aimed at a specific level, though a good knowledge of astronomy, at least up to that of thorough familiarity with the material in one of the many introductory astronomy books intended for first year university courses, is assumed. In addition some knowledge of mathematics and physics is required.
