Format: DJVUThis book is concerned with computer programs which translate other computer programs. They are generally known as translation programs or translators. Construed narrowly, the term "translator" denotes a program which transforms the representation of an algorithm from one language to another. It generates an output program to correspond to an input program. The content of the input program is by and large preserved, but its encoding is changed. Often the input encoding is more oriented to human communication and less to machine communication than is the output encoding. Such translations are performed by assemblers and compilers. Macro processors and linkers, on the other hand, perform translations in which changing the encoding is secondary to other functions, text substitution by the former and resolution of symbolic references by the latter.
