The Orford Fajar Advanced Learner's English-Malay Dictionary is the product of the translation of the English monolingual dictionary entitled Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (OALD). The endeavour to translate the original dictionary appeared to be a better choice compared to designing from scratch a bilingual dictionary. This is because the English OALD has a remarkable reputation as an efficient English monolingual dictionary that caters to the needs of students of English especially in aspects of English usage known to cause difficulties for foreign students. Hornby perceived that proficiency in English implied the ability to compose as well as to understand, and that the learner’s dictionary must be designed to develop both kinds of skill. Although at the onset the translation seemed to promise a shorter period of production, it was not so in reality. The translation of the OALD was marred by untoward events that delayed the process of production for a great many years.
