One to be proud of. The press would be out en mass, complete with the wartime publicity and propaganda machine (yes, the British had one too!), and many photos would be taken of the
town’s new fighter aircraft. Unfortunately, VR7219 didn’t survive too long once it saw action, and even worse, its pilot was killed during this last flight.
A sobering thought. Another soul lost to history. As a kid, I was fortunate. Darwen had many outlets which sold model kits, from specialised shops such as Drem Models, to Bridge Street Bike Shop which had a very good selection. Of course, there were newsagents too. I was truly blessed. The number of Spitfire models I actually built over that time probably ran well into double figures
