The chief difficulty for beginners in Sanskrit is to master and memorize the large number of grammatical forms.
In general it is fair to say that the acquisition of vocabulary is largely neglected. Although this neglect is quite understandable, it creates a basic difficulty for beginners in Sanskrit which is not usually overcome before the end of the second year.
The main problem is not so much that the student has to look up almost every word which he comes across in the course of his reading, but rather that the Sanskrit words strike him as arbitrarily-concocted polysyllabic conglomerations, which cannot be analysed and which must therefore be memorized individually.
