Wilhelm Junker was born of German parents in Moscow, he was influenced in his desire to explore Africa by Schweinfurth who drew his attention to the lands south of the Libyan desert, "a region at that time still shrouded in the veil of an awe-inspiring mystery". His fascination with the region led him to make three expeditions over a period of eleven years and he is recognised as one of the great African explorers. This is an English translation of the third volume of the German original dealing with the last years of the second Junker expedition in Central Africa.
