This book has been written for students across a range of language levels and contains exercises and activities for students preparing for the Cambridge IGCSE@ English as a Second Language series of examinations. The book is ideal for students who are in the earlier stages of learning English, but there is also lots of material which is aimed at refining language skills, helping students to progress towards assessment with confidence. The book contains a large amount of material which is intended to provide practice for the reading, writing, listening and speaking examinations, but also offers material which can used to practise general skills.
Matched to the Cambridge IGCSE syllabus, this comprehensive resource helps learners acquire crucial English language skills. Exam-style audio material can be found on the accompanying CD, so students can get realistic listening practice, including practice of the 'listening for inference' component - a crucial requirement of the latest syllabus. Exam practice is integrated throughout, driving top achievement in the four key skills.
Design of the bookThere are 12 chapters in this book and each one is based around a topic or theme. Each chapter covers all four main language learning skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking. We have tried to design the book to allow you to practise related skills. Chapters are structured around 'learning themes' which cover content and skills which flow naturally. For example, a learning theme which begins with a reading article will be extended and developed to incorporate work in the other skills areas. Once you have read about the work of a scientist, it is likely that you will then hear her interviewed. You may then follow this with a letter to a magazine promoting her work, and perhaps a discussion with a group of students about her work All four skills are interwoven and this is what we have tried to achieve throughout the book. We hope it encourages you to build up all four main skills equally and naturally, so that you feel confident as readers, writers, listeners and speakers.
