Pachman Ludek. The middle game in chess
London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1982. — 188 p. — ISBN: 9780710090713.
This is the second in a three-volume series of books by Ludek Pachman; the others are The Opening Game and Chess Endings for the Practical Player. It is written with beginners in mind and is intended for all those players who, though interested in chess strategy, have found such books as Pachman's own classic Modern Chess Strategy or Nimzovitch's My System and Euwe's Judgement and Planning in Chess more than a little their heads.
Pachman devotes the first half of the book to a comprehensive treatment of combinational elements, since he recognizes that at the beginner stage a sound knowledge of tactics is indispensable before strategy can be properly understood. He then examines practical aspects of strategyic planning in attack and defence, highlighting that subtle blend of tacticks and strategy which is the hallmark of all great players.
Ludek Pachman was an International chess grandmaster. He is widely known as a chess theorist and as the author of several books on chess, including Modern Chess Tactics and Attack and Defence in Modern Chess.
