Bensky A. Wireless positioning technologies and applications
Boston; London: Artech House, 2008. — 311 p. — ISBN13: 978-1-59693-130-5
This book is about wireless position estimation—how it works and what it’s used for. Range and location are two aspects of position that are related geometrically. Most applications of distance measurement are aimed at determining a radio terminal’s location. The book explains the relationships between the two concepts.
In some wireless systems, distance measurement and position location capabilities have become a necessary adjunct to communication. A big thrust in this direction occurred in 1995 when the FCC issued its directive for expanding 911 caller location services to cellular telephony. Other applications where position location is gaining importance are RFID, WLAN, and WPAN. Probably the best known and most widespread example of wireless location is the global positioning system (GPS). While several excellent sources describe GPS in great detail, this book explains the basics of the system and uses it as an example to demonstrate the application of fundamental distance measuring principles.
