Larousse Encyclopedia of World Geography
Foreword by L. Dudley Stamp. — New York: Odyssey Press, 1965. — 736 p.
Adapted from Geographie Universelle Larousse, edited by Pierre Deffontaines, Director of the French Institute, Barcelona, assisted by Mariel Jean-Brunhes Delamarre.
Published by Librairie Larousse of Paris in three large quarto volumes Geographie Universelle Larousse forms a comprehensive, scholarly and magnificently presented account of the world's surface which it would be hard to equal in any language. But in English editions the name Larousse is now firmly associated in the public mind with the single-volume encyclopedias — the Earth, Mythology and Astronomy —which have brought achievement in their respective fields right up to date and are available in a most attractive form to a large public. It was accordingly a logical step to condense the three volumes of the French Geographie Universelle into this single-volume encyclopedia, at the same time taking the opportunity to make certain that illustrations were up to date, that maps showed the latest changes in the kaleidoscopic political situation, and that the equally rapid developments in economic geography received due attention.
