In activity A, studentsdiscover how shorebirds are adapted for feeding by simulating speciesof shorebirds with beaks of different shapes and sizes, usingeveryday objects. They gather different food items with differentbeak types. They compare feeding success and survival to theseadaptations. In activity B, students play a tag game simulatingorganisms in a food chain and observe the concentration of toxicchemicals through the food chain. As prerequisites for participationin these activities, students should be somewhat familiar with theconcepts of adaptation and food chains and be able to construct bargraphs. The teacher's guide includes additional information to aid inprocessing the activities. Extension activities are provided alongwith suggested references, review questions and student worksheets (MCO).
