Consistent with his well-known respect for the Queen’s Pawn openings, Gyula Breyer had set a board with 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4, begging the opinion
of a passing friend. Szigmond Barasz pushed...e5!, and on 3 de, played 3...Ng4 and walked away. Analyzing feverishly, Breyer soon convinced
himself that the gambit was at least playable. Barasz, and later an eager Abonyi, joined in his examination.'
So a casual accident uncovers the Budapest Defense, in this Balogh anecdote. The three must have been familiar with the mirror-image Tennison
Gambit (1 Nf3 d5 2 e4), and realized at once that Barasz’ move had reversed color into a more favorable form.
