Cadogan Books, 1983. — 250 p. — ISBN: 1-85744-028-5.
This book spans almost the entire chess career of the former world champion. It covers the period 1935-1982. The opponents include some of the greatest names in chess history, Botvinnik, Keres, Euwe, Reshevsky, Bronstein, Boleslavsky, Fischer and Tal among others. The games are marked by harmony, elegance combined with logic. The preface elaborates on the author’s aesthetic credo and also includes some of his endgame studies. Admittedly, the two-volume set, Smyslov’s Best Games of Chess (Moravian Press) is more detailed and comprehensive. However, this is a good introduction to his work.
