It has been thought, however, that some parts at least of the book might also be used with profit by those Hungarians who come into contact with English people either in Hungary or abroad. This explains the fact that the English language part (based on British English usage with no attempt to include overseas divergencies) is sometimes more elaborate than would have been otherwise necessary.
The sentences are arranged under subject headings; when it would conduce to easier reference, these subject headings are subdivided into smaller sections. Whenever called for, an alphabetical list of words accompanies the sentences; necessary words belonging to none of the subject divisions specifically are added in classified lists in Appendix A. Both the sentences and the words have been chosen to cover in the available space all the real needs of an Everyman Traveller confronted with the general speech-situations as well as those peculiar to Hungary he is most likely to find himself in. The Hungarian equivalents are printed on the right-hand side; this order has, however, been reversed in a few instances when the reader is likely to come across the Hungarian text first, e. g. in official forms, inscriptions, etc. The English sentences are rendered in a free translation, care having been taken to find always the stereotyped sentence that seemed fittest to match the particular situation in current educated colloquial Hungarian. It has not been our aim to provide stretches of connected dialogue because in our view the accidental nature of such set dialogues renders that method inadequate. Though our method entails a certain degree of dictionary dryness and monotony, it is believed that the foreign visitor's aim is to be able to exchange simple information in a compact and ready form rather than to imitate conversations that can never be repeated in real life in exactly the same manner.
