Zhang Y., Chen H.H. (Eds.) Mobile WiMAX: Toward broadband wireless metropolitan area networks
Auerbach Publications, Taylor & Francis Group, Boca Raton, FL, 2008, 469 pages, ISBN‑10: 0‑8493‑2624‑9
Wireless metropolitan area networks (WirelessMANs) is emerging as a promising broadband wireless access (BWA) technology to provide high-speed, high bandwidth efficiency and high-capacity multimedia services for residential as well as enterprise applications. It is observed that WirelessMAN (e.g., WiMAX) is even regarded as a 4G technology. For the success of the WirelessMANs, international standardization organizations are very actively specifying the standards IEEE 802.16, ETSI HiperMAN and Korea WiBro.
The WiMAX forum has been working hard to make its efforts to ensure the compatibility between these technologies. WirelessMANs provide two working modes: point-to-multipoint (PMP) and mesh networking. Two optional architectures have also been designed to enable their flexible integration, quick deployment, easy maintenance, great scalability and resilient services. To achieve these goals, considerable efforts in both academia and industry communities have been made to address the various problems in all layers of protocol stack, i.e., physical, MAC, network and application layers. Efficient signal processing techniques, network architecture, secure protocols, programmable configuration, and flexible system design are needed to guarantee that the system will meet the all requirements.
This book concentrates on the basic concepts, recent advances, and latest standard specifications in the WirelessMANs with the emphasis on IEEE 802.16-based WiMAX. The book is comprised of 17 chapters, the topics of which comprehensively cover almost all essential issues in WirelessMANs. The subjects are explored in different issues and scenarios, including OFDM/OFMDA-based physical layer, RF and circuit, MIMO, signal processing algorithms, capacity, multimedia capability, QoS, medium access control (MAC), mobility management, handoff, dynamic channel assignment, cross-layer optimization and security protocols, etc. The book aims to provide readers with an all-in-one reference containing all aspects of the technical, practical, economic, and policy issues in WirelessMANs.
The first chapter introduces the basics of WirelessMAN. The other 16 chapters in this book are organized in three parts:
RF, Signal Processing, and MIMO.
Protocol Issues.
Security, Systems, and Policies.
